Take a leisurely walk through the oyster huts

Oyster huts

The oyster huts of Oléron

Take a leisurely stroll through the oyster huts and be amazed by the authentic landscapes of oyster farming in Oléron ! Oyster farming is a major economic activity on the island and has left a distinctive mark on the marshes after salt production.

You'll follow the oyster route along the eastern coast between Boyardville and Château-d’Oléron, surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The oyster farming area stretches all the way to Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, passing through Ors and La Chevalerie before reaching the Port des Salines.

These vast expanses of water, once salt marshes, are still used by oyster farmers to refine their oysters, giving them that unique green hue and the evocative nutty flavor of the Charente region.

During your journey, you'll have the chance to savor Marennes-Oléron oysters in traditional wooden huts and discover the work of skilled artisans who have transformed the place into a vibrant and welcoming environment.

Ceramicists, potters, seamstresses, sculptors, painters, and luthiers have breathed new life into the channels by tastefully reviving them.

How could you not be captivated by these huts adorned with remnants of boat paint, where oyster farmers and artists coexist ?
