Port des Salines

museums on the island of Oléron
Explore the salt marshes at Port des Salines in Grand-Village-Plage, a charming beach town in the southwest of Oléron Island ! This special place, known as a Nature Center, tells you about the history of making salt in Oléron. Taking a guided tour on a boat ride is a great chance to learn how a salt marsh works and see how salt was made in the past. If you prefer, you can also explore the salt-related attractions of Port des Salines on your own by walking along the trail with signs that explain things. In the summer, you can even try harvesting salt yourself using traditional tools like the servion for fleur de sel or the simouche for coarse salt. You'll become an expert in the old-fashioned ways of making sea salt! While you're there, make sure to visit the Salorge, where you can taste and buy different types of salt. Afterward, take a leisurely walk among the huts where producers and artisans work, and enjoy some food at the local restaurants. It's a lovely way to make the most of this special experience.
