Canoeing and kayaking on Oléron

On the island of Oléron, located between the ocean and the marshes, canoeing and kayaking are very popular. These quiet boats are a great way to explore and connect with the diverse wildlife and plant life in the area.

As you navigate through the channels and mudflats, you'll experience a peaceful and captivating atmosphere. Places like Boyardville, Château-d'Oléron, Grand-Village-Plage, and La Brée-les-Bains provide beautiful water routes where you can immerse yourself in the stunning nature and observe various bird species and typical vegetation.

You'll be amazed to come across egrets, catch glimpses of grey herons fishing, see stilts and groups of wild ducks !

Take a close look along the channels, and you'll spot samphire, which are small green sea beans, as well as small blue flowers called marsh everlasting. These plants can only grow in salty soil.

The lighting changes throughout the day, making each excursion unique. Consider planning a canoeing or kayaking trip at dawn when the sunlight gently touches the water. It's truly a magical moment...

If you're on the east coast, which is more preserved, sea kayaking is ideal, especially around Marennes-Plage where the current is mild, and the waves are gentle. Marennes-plage où le courant est faible et les vagues peu prononcées.

For the more adventurous, head to the west coast to experience the excitement of kayak-surfing and riding the waves. It's a thrilling experience !
