The oyster farm of Fort Royer

Fort Royer

Fort Royer

If you want to savor fresh oysters straight from the sea, paired with a glass of locally produced white wine from the Oléron winemakers, Fort Royer is the place to go. Fort Royer is a charming little village on the island of Oléron, France. It was created in the 1920s for oyster farming and has since become a picturesque oasis nestled in the beautiful Moëze-Oléron Nature Reserve, surrounded by pine forests and sandy dunes. This place feels timeless and is blessed with 14 kilometers of pristine coastline, mudflats, and marshes, creating a paradise for countless birds that live and migrate here.

Tide fishing technique

What could be more enjoyable than wandering among a cluster of forty wooden oyster shacks and embarking on a hike through oyster beds while observing oyster farmers in action? It's a fantastic opportunity to learn about both ancient and modern techniques of clam digging. Moreover, you'll discover the work of the women in the shacks, the traditional refinement of "Marennes-Oléron" oysters in the oyster ponds, and much more. Additionally, you'll have the chance to visit an old oyster farmer's shack and get hands-on experience with their vintage tools. You'll also get to explore the vegetation of the rugged coastline...truly an incredible adventure !
